Area converter
Convert mm², cm², m², hectares, km², square feet, square yards and acres.
What the result means
Area is length squared. A 10 m × 10 m room is 100 m², which is about 1,076 square feet — not 100 square feet.
How it is calculated
to = from × (factorFrom ÷ factorTo), using square metres as the common base
- Value: The amount in the starting unit.
- From / To: Units from the same measurement family.
Each unit is a multiple of a square metre. Convert through m² rather than converting length and forgetting to square the factor.
Assumptions
- Exact international conversion factors, then rounded for display.
- No surveying, temperature expansion or commodity density adjustments.
Worked example
100 m² in square feet
A 100 m² apartment is listed for an overseas buyer who thinks in square feet.
- Factor
- 1 m² = 10.76391 ft²
- Result
- 100 × 10.76391 ≈ 1,076.4 ft²
100 m² is a bit over a thousand square feet, not a small 100 ft² room.
Hectares for farms, square metres for homes
Australian property listings use square metres for houses and apartments, and hectares (10,000 m²) for rural land. Acres still appear in older rural descriptions: one acre is about 4,047 m², or 0.405 ha.
Flooring quotes in square metres should not be converted with a 10× rule of thumb. Use the factor 1 m² ≈ 10.764 ft².
