General information only

Everything on this site is general information. It does not take account of your objectives, financial situation or needs, and it is not a recommendation to do anything in particular. OzCalc is not a government agency, a bank, a lender, an insurer, a tax agent, a financial adviser or a law firm, and using the site does not create a professional relationship of any kind.

Before acting on a figure from this site — signing a contract, accepting an offer, lodging a return, applying for a loan or setting a household budget — check it against the official source named on the page, or with a professional who can consider your circumstances.

Why results are estimates

The calculators implement published methods on the inputs you type. They cannot know the facts that a real assessment depends on. In practice that means a result may differ from the amount you are actually paid, charged or assessed, for reasons including:

  • Circumstances the tool does not ask about — residency for tax purposes, salary sacrifice arrangements, other income, deductions, offsets, dependants, private health cover or study loans.
  • Rounding. Payroll systems round each pay, so a weekly or fortnightly figure will not always multiply exactly into the annual one.
  • Timing. Rates, thresholds and indexation change, sometimes part-way through a year, and a change may be announced before the data on this site is updated.
  • Contract and product terms. A lender’s fees, a retailer’s tariff structure, an award or an enterprise agreement can all override a general formula.
  • Deliberate simplifications, which are listed in the assumptions on each calculator page.

Where a calculation is regulated, the page names the authority, the dataset, the period it applies to and the date it was reviewed. If the official figure and our figure disagree, the official figure is correct and we would like to hear about it.

Tax, super and government figures

Income tax, the Medicare levy and surcharge, study and training loan repayments, GST and the superannuation guarantee are all set by law and administered by the Australian Taxation Office. Our figures are taken from ATO publications for the stated income year, but an estimate produced here is not an assessment. Your notice of assessment is.

PAYG estimates in particular reproduce the withholding formulas an employer uses. They are not a prediction of your final tax position, which depends on your whole return.

Lending, property and energy figures

Repayment, deposit, offset and rent figures are indicative. They exclude fees, charges, insurance, stamp duty and government charges unless a page says otherwise, and they assume the interest rate you enter stays fixed for the whole term, which is rarely true. Only a lender can tell you what you can borrow and what it will cost.

Energy costs depend on your tariff, your retailer, your meter and your actual usage. Appliance wattages used in examples are typical values, not measurements of your appliance. Use the rates on your own bill and the label on your own equipment.

Dates, holidays and working days

Public holidays are set by each state and territory, and local, regional and part-day holidays exist that a national tool may not list. State gazettes are authoritative. A contract or award may also define “business day” differently from the Monday-to-Friday convention used here, and its definition governs.

Telling us about a problem

If a result looks wrong or a rate is out of date, report it through the contact page or at hello@ozcalc.com. Naming the calculator and the inputs you used is enough — please do not send private financial or identifying information.
