What the result means

Overtime is extra hours paid at a multiplier of the ordinary rate. The multiplier comes from an award or agreement, not from this page.

How it is calculated

Total = ordinary hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier
  • Multiplier: 1.5 or 2 are common; your agreement controls.

Overtime hours are not added to ordinary hours before applying the multiplier.

Assumptions

  • Estimates only — not tax, legal, credit or financial advice. Check the official source or your contract before relying on a figure.
  • No casual loading, shift penalties or super on overtime.

Worked example

38 hours at $40 plus 4 hours at 1.5

A simple week.

Ordinary
38 × $40 = $1,520
Overtime
4 × $40 × 1.5 = $240
Total
$1,760

Four overtime hours add $240, not $160.

Not a substitute for an award

When overtime starts, whether meal breaks are paid, and whether penalties stack with overtime are legal questions. This is ordinary × rate plus overtime × rate × multiplier.

Questions

Does this include super?

No. Whether overtime attracts SG depends on the earnings definition. Use the super calculator on ordinary salary separately.
