Weight converter
Convert milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, ounces, pounds and stone.
What the result means
These conversions are mass in everyday language — what a scale reads — not force. A 70 kg person is about 11 stone, or 154 pounds.
How it is calculated
to = from × (factorFrom ÷ factorTo), using grams as the common base
- Value: The amount in the starting unit.
- From / To: Units from the same measurement family.
Every unit is a multiple of a gram. Convert into grams, then into the unit you want.
Assumptions
- Exact international conversion factors, then rounded for display.
- No surveying, temperature expansion or commodity density adjustments.
Worked example
70 kg in stone and pounds
A clinic records weight in kilograms. A patient is used to stone.
- Pounds
- 70 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 154.32 lb
- Stone
- 154.32 ÷ 14 ≈ 11.02 st
70 kg is just over 11 stone. Bathroom scales that switch units should match this, aside from display rounding.
Kilograms, not pounds, on Australian labels
Food, luggage and people are weighed in grams and kilograms here. Pounds and stone still appear in imported fitness content and older recipes.
A pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg. Stone is 14 pounds. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, not a US short ton.
Questions
Is a tonne the same as a ton?
A tonne (t) is 1,000 kg. A US short ton is 2,000 lb (about 907 kg). This converter uses tonnes.
Does this include carat?
No. Jewellery carats are 0.2 g and are a specialist unit.
