What the result means

Age in years, months and days uses calendar months, not a 30-day fiction. Turning 36 is the 36th anniversary of the birth date, and the leftover months and days are what is left after those whole years. 29 February birthdays are observed on 28 February in a common year.

• Birth: The date of birth, including 29 February where relevant.
• On: Often today, but any date you need the age on.

Years, months and leftover days match the date-difference calendar span. Days until the next birthday count midnights to the next anniversary.

A visa form asks for age on 19 August 2026, not today.

The “on” date is the whole point of the tool. Leave it on today only when you actually want today’s age.

This is a civil-calendar age, not a legal test

Licensing, voting, the age of majority and junior award rates can each define “age on this date” slightly differently — some use the beginning of the birthday, some use the end of the previous day, and some use a school-year cutoff that is not a birthday at all. This page reports the calendar span. It does not decide whether someone may vote, drive or be paid as an adult.

If you need age on a visa day, a school cutoff or a policy anniversary, change the “on” date to that day rather than using today and counting yourself.

Leap-day birthdays

A person born on 29 February 2004 turns a year older on 29 February in a leap year and on 28 February in a common year, which is the usual civil convention and the one used here. A statute that says something different — some do — wins.
