What the result means

A countdown is the number of midnights between two calendar dates. It answers “how many days until Christmas?” or “how many days since the invoice?”, not “how many hours until 7pm”. Same-day is zero: if both dates are 25 December, the day has arrived.

How it is calculated

Days = |end − start| in whole UTC days

• From: Usually today, but any starting calendar date.
• Until: The target date. Earlier than From counts as past.

The difference uses the same day-count as the date-difference calculator’s total days.

Worked example

19 August 2026 to Christmas 2026

A shop wants a “days until Christmas” sign and needs a number that will still be true in Perth and in Brisbane.

On 25 December the count is 0. Use whatever “today” is in your own city when you type this live — the default dates are a worked example, not your device clock.

Whole days, so a timezone cannot quietly shift the answer

Event start times need a timezone. A concert at 7pm in Perth is 9pm in Sydney, and a tool that pretends to count hours without asking the city will be wrong for someone. This page stays on dates so that cannot happen.

The count is the same total-days figure the date-difference calculator reports. Use that tool when you also want the span in years, months and weeks; use this one when you only want the integer sitting on a “days to go” graphic.

Past dates count backwards

If the “until” date is earlier than “from”, the result is how many days ago that date was, labelled as past. That is useful for an invoice date, a warranty start or “how long since we moved in”, without swapping the fields yourself.
